KAREN’S BOOK REVIEW

The Treasure House

★★★★☆

Reviewed September 30, 2026 · Fiction

Zoe is a single mother in her early thirties who wants one thing more than anything else in the world: a real home for her eight-year-old daughter, Flo. After growing up in foster care and spending much of her adult life moving from apartment to apartment, Zoe finally finds a house she can afford in a small Maine town. There is, of course, a reason for the bargain price. The previous owner was a hoarder, and the charming home is packed from floor to ceiling with books, letters, postcards, photographs, records and decades' worth of furniture and belongings. With the help of her foster family, Zoe begins the enormous job of clearing out the house, hoping to uncover a few valuable treasures along the way. Instead, she begins uncovering the history of the house itself and secrets from the people who lived there. At the same time, Zoe's own past unexpectedly comes back to haunt her. She believed that chapter was closed, and its sudden reappearance leaves her unsettled just as she is trying to build something new. Zoe also meets Jake, the handsome, grumpy local who runs the hardware store and knows just about everything and everyone. Naturally, their chemistry is off the chart and Jake becomes vital to the renovation and Zoe’s new life. A little romance, a little mystery, and that cozy fall-to-winter feeling that has you craving pumpkin spice lattes. It is sweet, easy to read, and felt like exactly the right amount of sugar! A charming and heartwarming read.
